Why Silly Rules?

I don't know about you, but there are times in my life when I absolutely hate a certain rule. I won't take the time to go into them, but as you read this I'm sure there is one you are thinking of this very moment. Sometimes teenagers think that the reason there are so many rules is to keep them from having fun. That is definitely not the case; the rules are there so you can have fun. Allow me to explain: In Deuteronomy 22:8 the Bible says, "When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house, if any man fall from thence." A battlement was a 3 to 4 ft. structure(much like a fence) that would be placed around the edge of a roof. Of course back then roofs were flat and were used much like a family room would be used today. The reason one would put this battlement around their roof was so they could not be blamed if someone fell off their roof. Ouch!!!!!
Teenager, the reason your parents give you rules is for the very same reason. They don't want you to fall off the roof. Don't look at rules as negative but as a positive. Just ask the kid who broke his arm when he fell off the roof, how much fun he has watching the other kids in the neighborhood playing. Live by God's rules now and you will be blessed later. Otherwise, you may have some pain.

Provers 6:10

" Forsake the foolish, and live..." Did you know that who you hang around will dramatically affect your life? I know everybody has heard of, or experienced peer pressure. Have you ever done something and later wondered why? It is called giving in to peer pressure and it is extremely common. The best way to combat peer pressure is to surround yourself with people who desire to do right. Forsake the foolish friends!!!!!

When I was in high school I learned this valuable truth. It happened at basketball practice. We were just doing a basic layup drill. The coach told us he didn't want us to anything fancy just regular layups. After a few times through a "friend" began to "encourage" me to do a 360 layup. I told him no, but he continued to bug me about it.Pretty soon, half of the team was "encouraging" me to do so. Eventually, I succumbed to the peer pressure. I recieved the pass and went in for my 360 layup. I made it!!!! My teamates cheered. The whistle blew, and I spent the next 25 minutes running suicides. I defintely wasn't living; I felt like I was dying. Young person if you want to live life to the fullest, you better forsake the foolish.

Fitly spoken....

Proverbs 25:11 " A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver."
Words are powerful. They can make or break somebody. The word "fitly" means, in a fit manner; suitable, at the right time. You see, fitly words can make somebody's day. How many of us have had a bad day, and somebody at the right time said something encouraging. On the other hand, how many of us have been having a good day, and somebody at the wrong time crushed us under the power of their words. We should all watch what we say to others. Look for those who need encouragement. Notice God uses word not words. It doesn't take alot of words to be an encouragement or a blessing, just " a word fitly spoken..."

Proverbs 1:5

No doubt you have heard the phrase, "A Proverb a day keeps the devil away." While that isn't necessarily true, a Proverb a day is a great place to start. Many people will try to at least read one chapter from the book of Proverbs everyday for their Bible reading. I think we should grow past that point; however, it is definely not a bad place to start.

Proverbs 1:10 "My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not." How many of us have gotten into trouble because we were influenced by someone else? My hand is raised. I have even been the one doing the enticing. The word entice means to to attract by offering hope of reward or pleasue. That's what they were telling the young man in Proverbs 1:11-14. They promised him precious substance and spoils. Young person the devil will promise you everything in order to get you to do anything but right. Sure, the things he offers might sound cool and appealing, but in the end you're just another person he can use for himself. I believe the Lord is looking and longing for some teenagers who will choose right. Will it be easy? NO it won't always be easy. However, I can promise you that doing right ALWAYS has better results than doing wrong.

Fasting?????

The other day I was praying and doing some reading, and I came across Matthew 17:21 "Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting." That verse hit me right between the eyes. Jesus said in Matthew 6 "when you give","when you pray", and "when you fast". I began to look into fasting because, though I hate to admit it, I had never really fasted. I read a book that was referred to me by a dear friend and found it to be very insightful. The book is Fasting by Jentezen Franklin.I do not know all of his teachings, but those in the book are very insightful. I know fasting is a "scary" word but I encourage everyone(myself included) to take a moment and consider....are we missing out on some "BIG" answers to prayer or a closer relationship with God because of our stomach?
